PHILADELPHIA (Sept. 14, 2020) – Spirits were high yesterday, as the Greater Philadelphia community gathered virtually to celebrate prostate cancer patients, survivors and caregivers at Philadelphia ZERO Prostate Cancer Run/Walk. More than $42,000 was raised through donations, sponsors and participant fundraising.
“While COVID-19 is changing how we get together, it is not changing our passion and dedication to
support patients and families through this crisis and celebrate community,” said Jamie Bearse, ZERO
CEO and President.
This year’s event was emceed by 6ABC Action News’ Cecily Tynan and included virtual guest appearance from MMA boxing legend, Burt Watson. Funds raised for this year’s Run/Walk event will go toward national efforts to provide research for new treatments, to enhance patient support resources, and to educate men and families about prostate cancer.
“Every day, I guide patients and their families through their prostate cancer journeys, experiencing the toll that this disease takes,” said Lauryn Wagner, an Oncology Nurse Navigator at MidLantic Urology and the Philadelphia ZERO Race Director. “It’s important for us come together to honor the strength of those affected by prostate cancer and to remember those we have lost. Especially, through these uncertain and often isolating times when we cannot come together physically, it is crucial to support our friends, family members and patients experiencing prostate cancer and to raise awareness for preventative testing to ensure we ZERO out this disease.”
The race, now in its second year in the Philadelphia region, is hosted by MidLantic Urology, the largest urology practice in Pennsylvania. Philadelphia is just one of 45 communities across the nation that is part of the ZERO Prostate Cancer Run/Walk series. The Run/Walk promotes awareness for prostate cancer and encourages men to be informed about their risk.
The ZERO Prostate Cancer Run/Walk series would not be possible without the support of national and local sponsors. Abbvie is the celebration’s premier partner. Other national sponsors include: Astellas, Pfizer Oncology, Bayer, Tolmar, FixIncontinence.com, EDcure.org and SpaceOAR™ Hydrogel. Philadelphia’s local sponsors are Advantagene, Sun Pharma, Dendreon, AMGEN, Progenics, Merck, Exact Sciences, Onco360, InTouch Med Supply, Blue Earth Diagnositics, ABC Medical and Janssen.
