PHILADELPHIA (March 23, 2020) – Today, the American Urological Association (AUA) and Fellows Committee announced Dr. Laurence H. Belkoff, DO, MSc. FACOS as the 2020 recipient of the AUA Residents and Fellows Committee Teaching Award. Dr. Belkoff is program director of the Main Line Health Urology Residency Program and managing partner of the UCSEPA division of MidLantic Urology.
The AUA Residents and Fellows Committee Teaching Award is a national honor that is presented annually to recognize one outstanding urology educator who has dedicated a portion of his/her career to teaching residents and advancing urology graduate medical education.
“I am honored and humbled to be the recipient of this prestigious award,” said Dr. Belkoff, program director of the Main Line Health Urology Residency Program. “I strongly believe in providing the best education possible for our future physicians. There is no greater sense of satisfaction than helping my residents succeed in becoming phenomenal urologic surgeons, and I am grateful for the opportunity to continue advancing medical education in the Greater Philadelphia region through the new Main Line Health Urology Residency Program.”
This past year, Dr. Belkoff’s dedication was particularly instrumental for his current cohort of 10 residents. As the former program director of the Urologic Surgery Residency Program at Hahnemann University Hospital, when it announced it would be closing its doors, Dr. Belkoff immediately sprung into action to avoid losing his program and orphaning his residents.
“I realized that transferring the program would be the best option for my residents to continue their training without missing a beat,” said Dr. Belkoff. “But there was no precedent for moving an entire program. I had to submit an appeal to the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) to create a new pathway for my program and residents to transition through.”
As a result of Dr. Belkoff’s appeal, the ACGME created a pathway for the orphaned Hahnemann Hospital program to apply as a new residency program at Main Line Health.
In addition to directing the Main Line Health Urology Residency Program, Dr. Belkoff serves as the director of clinical research at MidLantic Urology, director and chairman of the Department of Specialty Surgery and the Division of Urology at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, and clinical professor and Clinical Pathways Director at Drexel University College of Medicine. He is an ACGME Urology Review Committee member and past President of the American College of Osteopathic Surgeons. Dr. Belkoff received his undergraduate education at Emory University, earned his medical degree from Kanas City University of Medicine and Biosciences, and completed his Urologic Surgery residency at PCOM/Albert Einstein Medical Center. He and his wife Sherri have three children and currently reside in Lafayette Hill.
