Dr. Laurence Belkoff Awarded Guy D. Beaumont Jr. FACOS Award from American College of Osteopathic Surgeons

Congratulations to Dr. Laurence Belkoff on being named the 2022 recipient of the American College of Osteopathic Surgeons’ Guy D. Beaumont Jr. FACOS Award for his outstanding leadership and excellence in improving the quality of osteopathic education.

A 1982 graduate of Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences, he completed an internship at Botsford Hospital in Farmington Hills, Michigan and his General Surgery residency at Detroit Osteopathic Hospital and Bi-County Community Hospital in Michigan. He completed a urological surgery residency at Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine/Albert Einstein Medical Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania where he served as Chief Resident. He received the ACOS Resident Achievement Award and earned a Master of Science degree in Urology from the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine in 1987.

Graduate medical education has been the cornerstone of Dr. Belkoff’s academic career. He currently serves as Professor and Chair of the Department of Surgical Specialties and Division of Urology at PCOM, and Clinical Professor in the Department of Surgery at Drexel University College of Medicine in Philadelphia. He is the urology course director at PCOM. He had been the Site Director for the Einstein Urology Residency Program at Hahnemann University Hospital in Philadelphia. He initially established a new ACGME urology residency program at Hahnemann. With the closure of Hahnemann, he was given approval by the ACGME to create a new pathway to establish a Urology program at the Main Line Health System. He is the Medical Director of Urological Services for the Mercy Health System, and serves as faculty advisor to Sigma Sigma Phi, the scholarship/leadership fraternity at PCOM.

Dr. Belkoff has excelled as a leader and mentor. He served as President of the medical staff and as Medical Director at City Avenue Hospital in Philadelphia. He was instrumental in successfully transitioning PCOM’s graduate medical education programs to the Medical College of Pennsylvania Hospital when City Avenue Hospital closed. PCOM recognized his dedication by awarding him an honorary law degree (LLD).

His passion and achievement in clinical research have been exemplary. He is Medical Director of Research for MidLantic Urology/Solaris Health. He has been the Principal Investigator for more than 200 FDA clinical trials, has authored many peer-reviewed articles and has co-written numerous abstracts. Dr. Belkoff was the first osteopathic member of the ACGME Urology Resident Review Committee.

An active member of the ACOS, he has served on the Board of Governors as College President in 2008-2009, as Chair of the Urological Surgery Discipline, and on numerous committees, including as Chair of the Ethics, and Awards committees. He has been and currently is the Chair of the Strategic Planning Committee. He was instrumental in creating an Annual Clinical Assembly reception that acknowledges and honors the scholarly activity of residents and students. He has served as ACOS Trust Fund Chair.

Dr. Belkoff has been the recipient of two ACOS Presidential Recognition Awards, receiving the Orel F. Martin Medal in 2014 and the Charles L. Ballinger Distinguished Osteopathic Surgeon Award in 2016, respectively. In 2017, he received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Philadelphia Business Journal. In 2020, he was the first DO recipient of the American Urologic Association Resident and Fellows Committee Teaching Award.

Dr. Belkoff’s greatest achievement is his family- including his wife Sherri, and children Josh, Emily, Andie, and fiancé Tyler.
