What is interventional radiology?
Many conditions that once required surgery can now be treated with interventional radiology (IR). IR treatments are minimally invasive. When compared to open surgery, minimally invasive IR treatments result in:
- Less risk of complications
- Less pain
- Faster recovery
Embolization is a minimally invasive treatment that blocks one or more blood vessels or abnormal vascular channels. Carefully guided by radiologic imaging like ultrasounds, X-rays, CAT scans, and MRI scans, interventional radiologists perform the procedure using small tools like catheters and wires. IR treatments are available for these conditions:
Prostate artery embolization (PAE) for BPH
For men who have an enlarged prostate (BPH), a minimally invasive intervention is now available. PAE is a procedure that shrinks the prostate by cutting off its blood supply.
Talk to your urologist to find out if you are a candidate for a minimally invasive IR treatment. You must see your urologist for a referral.

My experience with the procedure of PAE was exceptional from start to finish. MidLantic’s IR Center in Chesterbrook is excellent in all phases. Dr. Ryan Bonshock was very thorough in explaining what was going to take place, during and after the procedure. It was easy to see that the entire team was not only true professionals, but also really care about their tasks as well as me. I’m very happy with the results of my prostate procedure – PAE. The result is wonderful. Dr Feldstein did my procedure and was very good to me. The staff also took very good care of me. I would recommend this for any man who is having urinary problems due to their enlarged prostate. I didn’t think that anything could help, but it did and I am very happy with the result. Thank you.
