NOT A STONES FAN? BE SUMMER-AWARE.
Quenching your thirst is vital to preventing kidney stones, especially during these dog days of summer. The heat and humidity increase your chances of becoming dehydrated, and dehydration can lead to kidney stones. Here’s why:
- When you’re dehydrated, you’re less likely to produce enough urine to carry salts, calcium, and uric acid out of your kidneys. In time, these minerals can form into stones.
If you’re not a fan of the (kidney) stones, follow these tips:
- Drink plenty of non-sugary fluids before you go outside, while you’re outside, and continue as you cool down.
- Check your urine color. If it’s pale yellow, you’re well hydrated. Any darker and you need to drink more.
- If you feel dehydrated, add a salty snack or hydrate with a sports drink that includes electrolytes.
- When you feel thirsty, your body is telling you to stop and hydrate. Listen!
If you develop a kidney stone, drinking lots of water may help you pass it naturally. But if a stone causes complications, such as an infection or blockage, it will have to be removed. The physicians at MidLantic Urology offer several options for stone removal, depending on the size, type, and location. Find a urologist close to you.
DON’T LET BPH GET IN THE WAY OF DOING WHAT YOU LOVE
If you have an enlarged prostate (BPH) – or think you might – you’re not alone. It’s a common condition many men experience as they age. You may have BPH (benign prostatic hyperplasia) if you:
- Find it difficult to start urinating
- Leak or dribble sometimes
- Have a weak urine stream
- Have the urge to go frequently, especially at night
Your symptoms may get in the way of doing what you love. But they don’t have to. BPH is treatable. It’s one of the most common reasons men visit us at MidLantic Urology.
When you visit our office we’ll explain the many ways to manage BPH. If one option doesn’t work for you, we’ll stay with you until we find the option that works best and fits your lifestyle.
Unsure if you have BPH? Take this short quiz to find out.
Bottom line, you don’t have to live with the frustration of BPH. Talk to your urologist if you are struggling with symptoms.
